Your Mind Rules Your Health

Writer: nutrikwestnutrikwest

Relation between mind and food:

We all, when not in a good state of mind, tend to take our meals or food for granted, by not paying attention to what exactly we are consuming, how much we are consuming, will that be beneficial for us or not and how it can affect our health.

For instance, if we are disturbed or angry by something at work, many a times to accomplish the desired outcome we often skip our meals or try to finish them too fast, hampering our metabolism and digestion. Some on the other hand, when angry in a particular situation, may prefer their favorite junk food over the nutritious meal prepared at home. In such situation, there are also chances of overeating the meals. In another situation, like say if someone is depressed with a certain issue, there are changes that the person would be a victim of reduced appetite due to his mental state and in turn be deprived of nutrition. Mood swings at different situations may also lead to specific food cravings, such as sweet, salty, cheesy foods to name a few, which may lead to further change in the composition of meals consumed. Even disorders related to anxiety like bulimia nervosa in certain individuals, contribute to the disturbed relation between mental health and food.

The frequency of such mental state changes can impact the overall health, resulting in different health conditions like diabetes, obesity, malnourishment, hypertension, increased lipid levels, deficiencies, heart diseases, etc.

Being mindful when around food does make a lot of difference in your food choices and health in turn. Hence it becomes important to think wisely about food in all states of mind. Not to overlook, to maintain the balance it’s also important to not obsess about the food choices you make, as both not regretting and enjoying the food is equally important. But it depends on individual food patterns, so consulting an expert is necessary to understand more about how you eat and what you should avoid.

Your food choices can be your medicine, but can prove to be a culprit if taken for granted.
